They didn't get it.
First, I decided to switch breakfast and lunch around. I got up early and made pancakes and sausage. I wrapped up a pancake and a couple of sausages in foil and packed them in Mr. B's lunchbox along with a container of maple syrup. I put the rest in the refrigerator to use for lunch later. Then I went on to make grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. After they were dressed and downstairs, I served them "breakfast". They ate it. Not ONE of them questioned my choice in morning cuisine.
They didn't get it.
I served the girls (only Miss E and Miss L as it was Miss M's day at Grandma and Papa's) and Mr. C the sausage and pancakes for lunch. Again, not a peep or protest. When Mr. B came home from school, he never brought it up. I asked him later about it, and he said that he didn't find it weird at all: "We have breakfast for dinner lots of times." True. But still...
They didn't get it.
For dinner, I just served hot dogs and red pepper strips (my kid's LOVE red bell pepper). I suddenly "remembered" that I "forgot" to serve the corn on the cob.

My kids weren't fooled for even a second. "Those are cupcakes!!" Hey...I worked hard on those--lining up rows and rows of yellow jelly beans! All for naught. Well, they did enjoy the cupcakes. And it was a beautiful evening so the kids ate outside.

Maybe my kids are weird. Maybe they're just not gullible. Maybe they don't know how to have fun and play along. Perhaps they are just too smart (my personal choice). But they just didn't get it. If I decide to attempt April Fool's Day again next year, I guess I'll have to up the ante. Hmmm... meatloaf topped with mashed potatoes made to look like cupcakes? (Why does everything I do revolve around food?)

Haha! Those were some good ideas. I can't believe they didn't question it. At least you tried!
