Here's how my Labor Day Weekend went:
1. BAKING
I agreed to bake cupcakes for friends of the family. They even paid me! Bonus! So Saturday, I baked up a storm. I ended up with about 3 dozen cupcakes in my freezer as well as several more "just for us". I did end up with about 60 tasty and nice looking cupcakes--30 vanilla and 30 chocolate. I also made little candy discs as decoration that said "60". Sunday, I decorated: frosting and rolling the edges in sprinkles. Then I arranged the chocolate ones in the shape of a "6" and the white ones in the shape of a "0". I think it all came out pretty good and the kids definitely enjoyed my "mistakes".
Here's the final result:

2. RUNNING
I ran my usual times (Saturday and Monday mornings), but instead of a long run on Saturday, I "only" ran 5 and this morning I ran a 15K race. That's 9.3 MILES! Crazy. I wouldn't say I raced as I've only run 9 miles once before, but I concentrated on improving my time and just finishing!
3. SORGHUM FESTIVAL
After my race, I quickly came home, showered, and loaded the family up, including Mr. J and his nurse (though I ended up with no photographic proof), and headed about 1 1/2 hours south to a Sorghum Festival on a homestead. We go every labor day as some of the people who live on the homestead are related--4th cousins or something like that. My dad is WAY into genealogy and would roll his eyes if he were reading this.
The kids watched mules (donkeys?) run the press that extracts the juice from the sorghum reeds then saw how the boiled it into syrup. They also saw a blacksmith and a working mill. And don't forget the barbecue brisket lunch with homemade bread and sides. Oh, and the homemade sorghum ice cream with pecans. YUM! The favorite part for the kids was the hay ride and getting to meet some barnyard animals up close and personal. The only drawback of the day was the heat--96 degrees! We were sweating buckets. Mr. J and his nurse faded fast, skipping the hay ride for the AC in one of the main buildings.
Here's a few photos of our fun:
